Electronic Press Kit for Jazz Trumpet Player Andrew McAnsh

Electronic Press Kit for Jazz Trumpet Player Andrew McAnsh

The very talented Andrew McAnsh from Toronto, ON hired me to design his EPK (Electronic Press Kit). He is an incredible performer, composer, and all around great guy… so I had to make sure he had an awesome EPK that would do him justice. I had fun working on the design, but what did Andrew have to say?

“Joel was incredibly easy to work with. He was very professional and gave me exactly what I wanted. Joel sent my EPK within 24 hours!”

Couldn’t have said it better myself. While my enlarged ego is is deflating, take a look at the results:

Alpha Health Services

We’ve just finished launching Alpha Health Services, the brand-new website for Toronto-based registered physiotherapist, Charlotte Anderson.

This project was a joint effort, alongside the very talented Elaine Slatter of XL Consulting Group.

This site is also “fully responsive”. For the non-nerds, responsive design is the modern way of building web sites in a way that the content of each page automatically shifts and resizes itself to accommodate the wide variety of screen sizes that are becoming more commonly used each day.

Learning Portuguese Online

Learning Portuguese Online

The last few months I have been hard at work on various exciting Internet projects. One of the most recent is Practice Portuguese.

When I began learning European Portuguese  (a.k.a. Continental Portuguese) about 10 months ago, the first thing I noticed was that there was a great lacking of materials specific to the Portuguese spoken in Portugal.

Brazilian Portuguese and European Portuguese are very different dialects, with regards to pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary. In Portugal, the language is much more closed and usually more difficult to understand than Brazilian, (even Brazilians need subtitles when watching Portuguese TV!).

There are also many more vowel sounds, and when confused, can often change the  meaning of a word or phrase.

Despite the major differences in dialect, there are few study materials available  (especially internationally) for Portuguese, which makes it difficult to find non-Brazilian study materials. Rosetta Stone, which is probably the most recognized language learning method on the market, only offer Brazilian.

To try and help fill this void, myself and Rui Coimbra have started a project called Practice Portuguese. It’s geared towards learners who have already surpassed the basics, and are looking for materials they can use to improve their aural comprehension.

We have many ideas for the project in the future. The first iteration is a Practice Portuguese podcast which is available in many podcasts, including the iTunes Store.

This downloadable audio show features Rui reading original, general interest articles at various speeds, followed by an explanation of vocabulary and expressions. We also offer a transcription that people can use to follow along and improve their learning experience.

I am very excited to be launching this project and hope that it helps many other Portuguese learners around the world.

The World Is My Office

The World Is My Office

One benefit of having a portable office is that I’m able to work anywhere, including outside at the beach on this beautiful day in Barrie, Ontario.

As I wrap up a couple web design projects that I’ve been working on the last few weeks, I watch my brother catching huge air as he kite surfs.

After being away for a while, September has been a great month to catch up with friends and clients.

I’m planning for a busy October full of exciting projects that will keep me out of trouble for most of of the month. I’m also planning to post more often here so keep your eyes peeled.

Aerial Circus Performer Jocka Carvalho

Aerial Circus Performer Jocka Carvalho

Feb 25

Lately I’ve found myself doing more and more video editing.

Jocka Carvalho is an incredibly talented and accomplished circus performer from Lisbon, Portugal. He specializes in hand balancing, aerial straps, and aerial silks. He had me work on a couple videos for two different projects he has been working on.

The first video features Jocka with his American partner, Maria Artim. Together, they perform many different styles of acts. The following is their introduction video I edited that is shown at the beginning of their 30 min performance. Some sections of it are more minimal, since some lighting and other visuals are happening simultaneously on stage.

The second video is for a duo project Jocka was working on with João Godinho from Portugal. All of the footage was shot in the same room with the same angle and lighting. I used different lighting and movement effects within Final Cut Pro X to add variety and excitement to what would otherwise be static footage.
