We’ve just finished launching Alpha Health Services, the brand-new website for Toronto-based registered physiotherapist, Charlotte Anderson.

This project was a joint effort, alongside the very talented Elaine Slatter of XL Consulting Group.

This site is also “fully responsive”. For the non-nerds, responsive design is the modern way of building web sites in a way that the content of each page automatically shifts and resizes itself to accommodate the wide variety of screen sizes that are becoming more commonly used each day.

After seeing one of my previous sites, Richard Stephen approached me to design a new website for his butcher shop, located in Port Carling, ON. This is a more advanced WordPress Theme to create, so it was an extra challenge. Some of the features included are: a slide show in the centre of the banner, easily-changable background according to season, and specially-formatted Products and Recipes sections. It was a pleasure working with Richard, and I am proud to be able to include this project in my portfolio.

Here’s what Richard had to say:

” Working with Joel was a pleasure. His professional design was above and beyond our expectations, proving that a fantastic website is possible for even the smallest business. We would recommend his services to anyone looking to promote themselves. We have only great things to say about Joel and his Web Design! “

Claude-Eric Brunelle is a talented vocalist, originally from Quebec, Canada. For his website, I wanted to take more of a single page approach. This is becoming more common to see, especially on artists’ websites. He also has fans who speak French and Spanish, so I used some navigation in the top right so the visitors could choose their preferred language, and still see the same content. On the page is also a way for fans to post comments, without having to navigate to a different area.

As for the design of the site, I used a darker, classy approach, which fit well with the images of himself that he had supplied me to work with. I am very happy with the result and I encourage you to take a look!

Here’s what Claude-Eric had to say about the experience:

“Working with Joel was a charm, every step of the way, I got a visual presentation and explanation of what the product would become. And then it was delivered! I quite appreciated the whole process.”

When I was approached to design this site, I was told that their group was looking for something simple and beautiful, which they could easily make changes and updates to themselves. I tried to capture a community feel, and also used wood and earth tones to try and convey a sense of coziness with a bit of a country feel. Check it out and see if you agree!

Here is what Gloria Woodside had to say about working with me on this project:

“This was not the first time I had worked with Joel, so I already knew I could expect a high level of creativity and patience with a prompt delivery. He listened carefully to our needs and turned them into a beautiful final product that will be enjoyed for years to come. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Joel Rendall’s Web Design to any business or organization looking for a top quality, cost-effective web presence.”

When the lake of bays association hired me to revamp their site, i knew it would be quite an undertaking. There were many pages involved, with subsections, and I made it my priority to make it as easy as possible for them to edit themselves.

I pulled off a few new tricks that I had never done before. For example, in the subsections, I wanted to include a sidebar widget that would show the other sub pages in the same section, without them having to built the submenus manually. I couldn’t find an existing solution, so on a rainy afternoon, I built it myself.

It was also important that the top header of each page be unique. So within WordPress, I added the special ability for the header to be chosen on a page by page basis. We made about 50 different headers, and had stunning images to work with.

LOBA will be editing the site internally, so an WordPress is the perfect platform to allow this. This project was a great challenge, and I’m thrilled with the results.

“Joel did an excellent job on our website. He tackled our requests for customized applications without hesitation. The end product is a great looking website that meets our specific needs. Joel’s professional and pleasant manner makes him a pleasure to work with and we look forward to a working with him in the future.”

OneFiftyFive is a Fine Dining Restaurant in Bracebridge, Ontario. It was sometimes challenging to figure out how to combine my own design opinions along with specific design preferences coming from a couple different people involved in the project. But it is very important to me that my client gets exactly what they’re looking for, even if it means multiple design revisions. I am very thrilled with the final results we achieved together.

There is a cool story behind this project: Initially, we completed the whole project without meeting face to face. Right before the site was posted, Jan and Peter Rickard, the restaurant owners, mentioned  they would be taking a cruise to Antartica, leaving from Buenos Aires. It so happened that I was living there just 15 minutes from the port, so at the end of their cruise, we finally met in person. It’s amazing that even though we’re from the same small town in Muskoka, Ontario, the first time we met was at the other side of the world!

On Tap is an amazingly talented a capella group from the United States. When they approached me to design their website, they had some specific ideas in mind, such as the “Guest Check” concept in the main menu. I also challenged myself to create their “Listen” page with playable mp3 samples, without the use of Flash. (Adobe Flash is unsupported on many mobile devices, especially the iPhone/iPod/iPad devices. It is important to me to avoid using Flash so that the website can function consistently across all of the newest devices). Continue reading “On Tap” »

Liz Mullan from Carnaross Consulting, approached me to redesign her website that had been offline for some time. The goal was to great a professional web presence, while keeping the cost very reasonable.

An unexpected bonus is that because I work exclusively with WordPress as a content management tool, site updates are very easy for her to do in the future. An amazing thing about doing business in this technology age is that Liz and myself worked on this website without ever meeting in person. All of the work was successfully done over email.

I am very happy with how this site turned out – clean and professional, which will appeal well to the broad base of clients she serves.

Here is what Liz Mullan from Carnaross had to say:

“Joel is completely right- all work completed sight unseen.

In addition to Joel’s obvious talents he was attentive and listened well to my needs- he got it- as they say!!

He  provided excellent customer service,  delivering a high quality product ( I hope you agree!!!) on budget and on time. You can’t ask for better than that!!!!

Many thanks,  Joel

As well as a freelance web designer, I am also a professional musician. I had been drumming in Vivian’s jazz trio for just over a year when she finally decided it was time to upgrade her website. It was an ideal situation, since I understand the music business, and what kind of tone (pardon the pun), she wanted to project on her website. Continue reading “Vivian Clement” »

This beautiful design is a result of Vivian Clement‘s artistic input, as well as my own creative design skills. John and Thelma Jarvis are very successful Realtors for Royal LePage Lakes of Muskoka, specializing in Waterfront properties. Thelma loves to write, and has posted a lot of content to the website related to Design, Real Estate… she even posts real estate statistics to her blog!

This is the second website I have created for them. This new site needed to incorporate a blog, and Thelma learned how easy it was to post to it herself.

I thought it was appropriate to try out a new technique on this design – You’ll notice that when you click on “Blog” in the sidebar, then all of the blog categories show underneath it. Most sites using WordPress have the blog categories showing all the time. But I didn’t want to have the added distraction and confusion. Some people (especially in the Jarvis’s demographic) might even know what a blog was. The blog categories could get confused with the main menu items. So the solution was to make the blog categories collapsible and it works well to keep everything nice and clean.

I have also designed many of the newsletters and special reports featured on the site, which you will find in their respective pages of the site.

Here’s what Thelma had to say about the experience of working with me:

“Joel is a creative individual who has good knowledge of web design and many other marketing practises appropriate to real estate, and which could be easily extrapolated to other businesses He did an excellent job on our web site and he also created a whole range of other marketing pieces that match the design and integrity of our site. He has contributed well to the success of our business” – May 22, 2011

It has been a pleasure working with the Jarvis’s over the years, and this design will be proudly displayed in my portfolio for years to come. Click here to visit John and Thelma Jarvis’s Website

A few years after graduating high school, I was approached by my former music teacher, Jackie Mitchell, to develop a site for her music program. She needed to be able to edit the site herself, and I immediately knew that setting up the site to use WordPress would be an ideal platform.

The design definitely had to have a music theme, since I knew the target audience would be creative types.
One of the most interesting ways Jackie uses the site is for communicating with her students’ parents while they away on music-related trips. She also uses the site to post materials for assignments, and showcase her students’ talent.

I had a lot of fun creating this design, and am proud to be featuring it in my portfolio. Click here to visit.

“Having worked with Joel in our band, I knew he was very adept and creative on the computer and a pleasure to work with. His calm disposition and good work ethic makes the sharing of ideas invigorating. Although I had some clear thoughts on what I wanted for the web site, I knew Joel would create all the difficult added touches and design elements that make a site appealing and effortless to use.

Training parents and students to access the site for information took some repetition.  The students and parents now know to look at our ‘blog’ for information regarding changes to our weekly rehearsal or annual trip (due to blizzards, conflicts), in addition to fundraising events and performance details. It has been an added communication asset between the school’s instrumental music program and families. Using it as a daily journal when we traveled to Europe with the band, for a 10-day performance tour, was wonderful for the parents and friends back home–especially when I delegated the task to a couple of students. I also appreciate receiving the monthly analytics to see how often the site is accessed.”

A few years after I launched Jennifer’s first Appraise Muskoka site, Jennifer approached me to work on a new design. Her business had changed, and rather than just featuring her Appraising services, it was important that we also highlighted her Real Estate and Property Management businesses.

To show visually that she has a three-part business, I used three drop down menus underneath the header. When you move your mouse over one of the items, a sub menu drops down with more pages.

Because I built the site on the WordPress platform, Jennifer has the ability to edit the text on her pages herself. She can even add new pages that will automatically appear in their respective drop down menu. I’m very excited to be able to develop sites in such a dynamic way. As web design technique get better and better, my clients benefit.

Here’s what Jennifer had to say about working with me:

“It would take too long to fully describe how much I appreciated working with Joel. He is very knowledgeable in his field. He is always at the other end of the email to help with problems when they arise. He is creative and definitely thinks outside the box. I would recommend him every day of the week for website, personal marketing and IT consultation, to quickly name a few things.” – May 22, 2011
